The ISM SNAP Surveys Home Page

ISM SNAP logo The ISM SNAP Surveys were Cycle-8, 9, and 11 Hubble Space Telescope observing programs to use the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) to observe interstellar absorption lines toward large samples of O and B-type stars. High resolution (R~46,000 or 114,000) echelle spectra were obtained for numerous interstellar absorption lines. By using the SNAPSHOT observing mode, which is used to fill in any gaps in the observing schedule, we successfully obtained spectra of 54, 28, and 31 stars respectively with typical S/N-ratios of 30 to 45 per pixel.

The Cycle-8 observing program ( GO8241) was designed to obtain R~114,000 spectra between 1160 and 1360Å to explore the properties of the diffuse interstellar medium, including the abundances of a number of elements including O, Mg, P, Ni, Cu, Ge, and Kr.

The Cycle-9 ( GO8662) and Cycle-11 ( GO9434) observing programs were designed to obtain either R~46,000 spectra between 1150 and 1700Å or R~114,000 spectra between 1388 and 1590Å to explore the properties of the hot interstellar medium by observing lines of highly ionized C, N, and Si.
